HANTOUR:The Tank 300 and Tank 400 are excellent off-roaders, and they’re just as comfortable to drive in the city.

Once upon a time, the Toyota Prado was the most common vehicle on the 318 National Highway. Nowadays, it’s definitely the Great Wall Tank series that dominates the road, especially the Tank 300 , which is everywhere. Thanks to their rugged design, impressive power, and strong off-road capabilities, the Tank series has won people’s favor. But how do they perform in urban driving? Taking advantage of the "Tank Wave Summer Chengdu Pioneer Sports Rally" event, we tested both the Tank 300 and Tank 400 on the road and in light off-road conditions. Here’s a share of our driving experience.

The test drive included both road and off-road segments. From the starting point to the off-road venue, I drove the gasoline version of the Tank 400 for over 50 kilometers, covering urban roads, highways, township roads, and rural roads. For a mid-to-large SUV like the Tank 400, which is nearly 5 meters long, testing it on such roads was a good way to verify its overall adaptability—after all, how easy it is to drive in daily scenarios is what matters most.

After leaving the parking lot, we hit busy urban roads. Thanks to the 2.0T + 9AT golden power combination with a 48V mild-hybrid P0 motor, the power response was quick during stop-and-go traffic, and gear shifts were smooth . Its maximum power reaches 185kW (252 horsepower), peak torque is 380N・m, and the WLTC combined fuel consumption is only 9.85L/100km. On the highway, accelerating to 120km/h was effortless. When overtaking, a deep press on the accelerator prompted an immediate response from the engine and transmission, making overtaking a breeze.

Even on township and rural roads, this "big guy" was surprisingly easy to handle. The steering was precise, with accurate direction pointing, and it had good anti-roll performance when taking sharp turns. When encountering width-limiting gates, the 540° panoramic camera made it easy to pass.

Upon arriving at the destination, I got to experience the off-road capabilities of the Tank 300 diesel version (due to time constraints and many people waiting for test drives, I only got a ride-along instead of driving it myself). The off-road test track included a section of rough roads with big potholes and heavy mud, making it a mild off-road experience.

Before entering the off-road section, the Tank 300 was switched to 4H mode, which includes four modes: Standard, Snow, Mud, and Sand, covering most off-road scenarios. For this mild off-road section, 4H mode was more than sufficient. The driver was a girl who initially worried she might not handle it well, but after driving a while, her concerns proved unnecessary. She even joked that two-wheel drive would have been enough, given the vehicle’s power performance.

The Tank 300 diesel version is equipped with a new generation 2.4T high-performance, low-consumption diesel engine, with a maximum net power of 135kW and a maximum net torque of 480N·m. It can deliver peak torque at 1500rpm, ensuring strong power continuity, making driving hassle-free and getting out of tricky terrain easier. Moreover, the engine has a thermal efficiency of 42.3%, with a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 8.5L/100km and a WLTC range of up to 900km. In long-distance cruising scenarios, the fuel consumption can be as low as less than 6.5L/100km, allowing it to run 1200km on a full tank. Such fuel efficiency is more than acceptable for daily urban commuting—even better than some fuel-powered sedans.

In addition, the Tank 300 features a longitudinal 9HAT transmission, a professional off-road non-load-bearing chassis, front/rear axle electronic differential locks, all-terrain-adaptable suspension, 360° panoramic imaging, under-chassis perspective, and a high-torque transfer case, among other hardcore off-road equipment. From the actual experience, the Tank 300’s off-road capabilities are impressive, even for novice off-roaders, who can handle it with ease.

Notably, the 2025 Tank 300 adopts an electronic column shifter, making the interior look more minimalist and the functions easier to operate. As a trendy off-road SUV, the Tank 300 offers endless possibilities in terms of color, space, and modification. It also has a 2.5-ton towing capacity, allowing it to tow a caravan for an impromptu trip or a yacht for water adventures, breaking through scenario boundaries and easily achieving multi-purpose use.

As for the Tank 400’s off-road capabilities, although I didn’t get to experience it firsthand, watching others test it on the off-road track showed that it passed with ease. The Tank 400 features a non-load-bearing body design and is equipped with strong off-road gear such as Mlock mechanical locking + all-terrain system. It comes standard with three locks, tank turn, and creep mode, along with all-terrain modes like "Mountain, Desert, Snow & Ice, Rock". In terms of passability, it has an approach angle of 33°, departure angle of 31°, ramp breakover angle of 22.5°, minimum ground clearance of 235mm, and a maximum wading depth of 800mm, enabling it to handle steep slopes and wading sections with ease.

Conclusion:

After test-driving the Tank 400 gasoline version on the road and experiencing the Tank 300 diesel version in mild off-road conditions, it’s clear that—as the title suggests—"they’re great at off-roading and just as comfortable to drive in the city". Both the Tank 300 and Tank 400 are available in gasoline, diesel, and Hi4-T versions, meeting the needs of different consumers. The Tank 300’s classic boxy design appeals to users of all ages, while the Tank 400’s mecha-style design, with sharp lines and angular edges, gives it a strong rugged off-road vibe, making it more to young people’s taste. In terms of off-road capabilities, the Tank 300 and Tank 400 series are definitely top choices in the hardcore off-road SUV market.
