When traveling in Western Sichuan, you'll often spot many Tank 300s. Whether for self-driving tours or group trips, the Tank 300 stands out with its impressive value for money. Not only is it affordably priced, but its performance remains strong even on plateaus. Equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, it handles the complex Sichuan-Tibet roads with ease. With a chassis height of 224mm, plus generous approach, departure, and breakover angles, it navigates all kinds of tough terrains effortlessly.
The Tank 300 is already a star in Western Sichuan. Recently, we test-drove the Tank 300 and Tank 400 series in Chengdu, covering urban roads, highways, expressways, rural lanes, and off-road trails to fully experience their performance across different scenarios.
Tank 300: A Companion for Trendsetters
Stepping inside, beyond the excellent driving visibility, you'd hardly guess it's a hardcore off-roader. A 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch central control screen deliver a tech-forward vibe, with a smooth infotainment system supporting voice control. The four-zone voice recognition is highly responsive, even for rear passengers.
Behind the steering wheel is a new column-mounted shifter. At first glance, it's a trendy design, but off-road tests revealed its practicality: it reduces the physical movement needed for shifting, letting drivers focus more on the road ahead and enhancing off-road safety.
The Nappa leather seats feel luxurious, with soft padding across all surfaces above the waistline, boasting a smooth touch. With 64-color ambient lighting, its sense of luxury rivals that of 400,000-yuan SUVs.
The 2025 Tank 300 upgrades its transmission, four-wheel drive system, power, and off-road gear, offering Hi4-T, diesel, and gasoline variants. We tested the 2025 gasoline version, with a 2.0T + 9AT powertrain. It's quick off the line at low speeds and confident for high-speed overtakes. Despite weighing over 2 tons, the throttle is tuned to be responsive, making city traffic easy to navigate. With a maximum net power of 162kW and peak torque of 380N·m, it balances strong performance with improved fuel efficiency, delivering a smooth, comfortable ride – perfect for both daily commutes and off-road expeditions.
For off-road beginners, parking and passing narrow roads can be daunting, but the 360° panoramic camera + transparent chassis feature is a lifesaver. During off-road sections, we could clearly see under the chassis, eliminating worries about scraping the undercarriage.
Further upgrades include forged aluminum upper control arms (lighter yet stronger), and a roll-detection switch to prevent accidental airbag deployment in extreme off-road situations. With electronic front and rear differential locks, chassis visualization, crawl control, and Tank Turn, it handles off-road scenarios of varying intensity, making off-roading more accessible.
Tank 400: Mecha Aesthetics + All-Terrain Dominance
First impressions of the Tank 400: its classic off-road look is domineering. The black body with bold lines exudes sheer presence. Factory-designed with modification potential, it pairs with off-road fixed side steps and roof racks to create a personalized style, carrying forward its "mecha warrior" trend DNA. Whether tackling tough waterside trails or cruising city streets, the Tank 400 perfectly expresses a unique attitude.
Power is its soul. The gasoline version features a 2.0T engine with a 48V mild hybrid system – the same 180kW maximum net power and 380N·m peak torque as the plug-in hybrid variant – mated to a 9AT. The diesel version gets a 2.4T engine with 135kW maximum net power and 480N·m torque, explaining why many enthusiasts favor diesel: its robust torque handles extreme terrains effortlessly. Additionally, the gasoline version’s fuel tank is enlarged to 80L, and the diesel version to 78L, easily supporting long-distance expeditions.
Its off-road credentials are strong: 33° approach angle, 31° departure angle, 235mm minimum ground clearance, and 800mm maximum wading depth. The four-wheel drive system remains excellent, featuring a TOD intelligent 4WD system, up to three locks, and 12 driving modes. Crawl control and Tank Turn are handy for outdoor off-roading.
The off-road fixed side steps protect doors and sills from scratches by branches and rocks when traversing waterside bushes or rocky areas. The non-load-bearing body offers high torsional rigidity, ensuring stability even when parked on slippery slopes, making getting in/out and fetching gear safer. The 540° panoramic camera + transparent chassis real-time displays undercarriage gravel and potholes, avoiding scrapes.
