Today, as the hardcore off-road vehicle market is gradually eroded by electrification and urban SUVs, the Ford Bronco 1966 unveiled at the Chengdu Auto Show is like a tribute to pure mechanics and off-road spirit. The Ford Bronco 1966 is renamed from the previous Ford Bronco 60th Anniversary Edition. This pre-sale launches two configurations in total: the Standard Edition at RMB 386,600 and the Big Foot Edition at RMB 436,600. Judging from the price, it is clearly targeted at mid-to-high-end off-road enthusiasts. Compared with the starting price of RMB 299,800 for the regular version, the 1966 Edition is nearly RMB 90,000 more expensive. Is the extra money worth it?
Although it is a special-edition model, there are not many changes to its appearance—only some special logos are added in certain positions. The overall shape follows the design style of the regular version, but adjustments have been made to the front grille and wheels, with retro-style kits installed to enhance the vehicle's recognition. At the same time, it adopts a blue-white two-tone body, and the center of the grille is equipped with a red English logo, creating a more layered visual effect. The rear of the car adopts the vertical taillight design commonly seen on hardcore off-road vehicles, and is equipped with a rear-mounted spare tire and a side-opening tailgate—all of which are iconic designs of off-road vehicles.
In terms of body dimensions, the length, width and height are 4825/2070/1990mm respectively, with a wheelbase of 2950mm.
Inside the car, it continues to be equipped with dual 12-inch LCD instrument cluster and central control screen, with a high-performance Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip built-in. However, it also retains some physical buttons, which can be regarded as a combination of tradition and modernity, adding more practicality.
As a special-edition model, a red LOGO is added to the center control panel on the co-pilot side, and a 60th Anniversary exclusive logo is incorporated into the seats, resulting in high overall recognition.
In terms of power, it is equipped with a 2.3T turbocharged engine, with a maximum power of 202kW and a maximum torque of 429N·m. The transmission system is matched with a 10-speed automatic manual transmission. This power assembly is mature and reliable, but against the background where hybrid and extended-range technologies are gradually becoming mainstream, the pure fuel configuration may make some users feel slightly conservative. However, on the other hand, in extreme off-road environments, the stability and immediate response of the traditional fuel structure still have irreplaceable advantages.
In the RMB 400,000-level hardcore off-road vehicle market, the Bronco still faces great pressure, as it has to compete with domestic high-end models such as the Tank 700. So, in an era where new energy vehicles are expanding into the off-road segment, are you still willing to pay for a pure fuel, retro-style hardcore off-road vehicle?
